Continuity Sequence Evaluation

  1. Identify at least 2 elements of the video (final version or during production / post-production) that you feel worked well and state why you feel it worked well.
  2. Identify at least 2 elements of the video (final version or during production / post-production) that you feel could have been improved and state why you feel they were not successful

One of my absolute favourite elements in the video we produced was the opening scene whereby the camera lens was out of focus to mirror the vision of the subject without their glasses on. As they arise and reach for their glasses, the image becomes gradually clearer the closer the glasses are to the subjects eyes; this was all done using a close-up shot and at eye-level to emphasis the expression of the subject once their vision has come back to them. In addition, I took inspiration for this scene from Harry Potter as I feel it allows viewers to somewhat embody the subject, creating an immersive experience.

Breaking the fourth wall: As part of the mime's 'morning routine', he gets up from his supposed bed and walks towards the "window", which in this case, was in the direction of the camera lens. To inform viewers that the camera was in the exact place of the pretend window, the mime reenacts someone opening the curtains right in front of it. Throughout all this, the camera remains stationary, and the shot distance only changes because of the mimes movements- from a medium shot (however during the editing process, I think we lost that clip) to a close-up and the camera angle is at eye-level to mimic the eyesight of the mime.

 - Revealing the heart
Close up shot:
This scene would have worked perfectly had the camera not had neither me nor Taylor in the shot and instead had the entire two halves of the heart coming together.
Zoom
Close up shot:
For this, Robbie had attempted to re-create the iconic shock-horror scene in Jaws, as the subject, played by myself, realises she has found the other half of her heart (in the hands of a male mime).
However, due to dismal atmosphere generated from the video up until this point, this scene seems very out-of-place as it comes across quite comedic. That ultimately comes down to the that fact I had not acted according to the mood of the video and also poor time management to shoot another ‘zoom’ shot.
·         -Colour
Our initial intentions with the video was to make every scene black and white, however once the other half of the heart was found, all saturation was to be removed from the clips that follow. Afterwards, we decided against that idea as I suggested that the entirety of the video be kept in a black and white format to give a more olden-day appearance of film. The only exception for colour was the heart, which I thought could be kept in its original form: red. Thus, bringing more emphasis to this idea of love and how impactful the emotion can be on others.
·        - Music
Unfortunately, there was a shortage of time and so the music that was added in conjunction with the video itself did not necessarily create the desired effect we wanted on the audience, especially towards the end. The music remained quite upsetting despite the two mime’s happy ending: finding a companion/ the other half of their heart.
